Low Cost Commodity Plastics

Have you ever heard of commodity plastic? Commodity plastics are plastics that are used in high volume and a wide range of applications, such as film for packaging, photographic and magnetic tape, clothing, beverage and trash containers and a variety of household products where mechanical properties and service environments are not critical. Examples of commodity plastics are polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, poly(methyl methacrylate) and more.

Recently, a research team led by Kang Sang-wook, professor of Sangmyung University, and a graduate student, Kim Min-soo, announced that they had secured technology to obtain ethylene and propylene at low cost, which are materials for commodity plastic.


Olefin materials, such as ethylene and propylene in crude oil, are separated and produced through processes of a distillation column in petrochemical complexes. Generally, they are separated using different boiling points. The process of boiling and cooling at temperatures below minus 30 degrees must be repeated more than 100 times to obtain ethylene and propylene of a high degree of purity. Efforts have been made all over the world to replace the previous separation technique because its cost amounts to about 200 billion won a year in Korea.The membrane, which utilizes silver (Ag) ions, can get high purity olefin material with just one pass, but problems have been found in terms of durability.As a way to replace this, a membrane using silver (Ag) nanoparticles has been developed and this has received much attention due to its excellent durability.However, there were many difficulties in commercialization due to low transmission performance.To improve this, Professor Kang Sang-wook and his team recently succeeded in developing an olefin membrane that shows high permeability and mechanical properties at the same time utilizing durable silver (Ag) nanoparticles. 


The newly developed partitioning membrane is expected to replace the existing high-cost distillation column separation process if further cost-cutting studies are carried out.
