A day packed with mouthwatering food, electrifying performances by student clubs, and surprise appearances by celebrities usually only seen on TV—it can only be the university festival. For students, the festival is more than just an event; it’s a brief yet exhilarating escape from academic pressures. This year, that excitement returned once again. Sangmyung University’s signature festival, Daedongje, was held on the Seoul campus from May 7 to May 9 under the theme “Wave.” Picture 1: 2025 Daedong Festival <WAVE> poster Booths That Brought the Festival to Life To celebrate the festival, various student councils and academic departments operated booths with unique themes and menus. Dishes such as grilled pork belly with bibimmyeon, yakisoba buns, and flame - grilled skewers attracted constant lines. Among them, the mala xiang guo booth run by the Department of Food and Nutrition stood out for its exceptional popularity. On Everytime, students commented that it was “genuinely delicious” and “surprisingly generous in portion.” The menu selection — reflecting the current popularity of spicy mala flavors among young people — often sold out, proving its strong appeal throughout the event. By Soi Lee, Cub-Reporter Leesoi3157@naver.com Picture 1: Before the contest begin, at the Cheonan Campus in Hannuri Hall A presentation contest was held at the Cheonan Campus in Hannuri Hall No. 109, on May 27, 2025. The presentation topic for this first semester is “Design My Own Major”, and they can choose one of the topics from a new curriculum using our school's academic system and planning a micro major curriculum by converging majors between campuses. One or two Sangmyung University students each team can form excluding the winner of the prize on the second semester 2024. A total of nine teams go to the finals after submitting presentation videos about three to five minutes in the preliminary round. In the finals, each team has to make a ten-minute presentation and participate in the question-and-answer time, and all finalists can receive an award. In addition, all participants receive 15 points for extracurricular programs mileage. Why This Contest Matters to Students This contest is not merely a competition. It is an educational experience designed to promote academic autonomy, creativity, and interdisciplinary thinking. In a rapidly changing educational curriculum, students are increasingly being asked to take ownership of their learning. By participating in this contest, students are given a rare opportunity to analyze their academic environments and develop personalized pathways that reflect both their interests and career goals. Moreover, the contest helps students to improve crucial soft skills such as public speaking, teamwork, critical thinking, and project planning. Picture 2: Professor Hyewon Lim’s general review before the award An Interview with Professor Hyewon Lim To better understand the intentions and values behind the presentation contest, the following questions were asked to the organizing professor: Hyewon Lim before the contest was held. At first, I asked the professor, who is the faculty of The Gyedang Cultural Education Center and takes charge of general education classes such as Thinking and expression, and Collaborative Communication, why chose this topic “Design My Own Major” as the theme of this contest and what are the unique strengths or advantages that distinguish this contest from other student activities. In response, she replied that this year the importance of self-directed learning has increased as autonomous and convergence majors have expanded further. Also the topic of the contest so far has not been a good topic to capture my story, but this theme was selected by discussing with the Seoul campus faculty because it is expected that the presenters will be able to naturally develop their self-directed learning skills by having more diverse concerns about my career path. And through this competition, you can develop your speaking skills, the most important ability in communication and self-expression, and improve your information processing ability and critical thinking skills in the process of collecting and organizing data for presentations. Additionally, the professor said, "I think writing is the basis of speaking," and gave some tips to get a good result in the competition that it is most important to read and write a lot consistently because speaking skills improve in a step-by-step way. Editor's Note: Advice for First Time Participants Many students may hesitate to participate in the presentation contest for the first time because they do not know how to prepare for it. Therefore, I would like to give you tips based on what I felt when I participating as an audience panel in 2025 presentation contest. Choosing a topic that suits your personal interests or future goals will make the process more interesting and manageable. Since this competition focuses on designing academic curriculum, an in-depth review of Sangmyung University's academic system and course catalog is an essential first step. Teamwork is also an important factor. For a team of two, sharing responsibilities according to each member's strengths, such as research, design, and public speaking, can increase both efficiency and overall quality. Also, successful participants emphasize the importance of expecting a Q&A session in the final round. Above all, as the professor emphasized, the key to the presentation is communication with the audience, The presenter must be fully aware of the content so that you can successfully convey what you want to say to the audience. Practicing answers to potential questions in advance will not only reduce anxiety but also strengthen the depth of your presentation. Finally, during the preparation process, consulting with a professor or academic advisor can provide valuable insights. Their feedback can help refine the structure and logic of your proposal, making your presentation more consistent and persuasive. For many students, the competition can be an opportunity beyond just extracurricular activities to explore academic creativity, build confidence, and take the lead in shaping your own education. To the Students Who Are Hesitant to Participate Although the first semester 2025 contest has finished, Sangmyung University’s presentation contest is held every semester. Students can participate not only as presenters but also as audience members during the final round. Audience participation offers exposure to various student-designed academic plans and encourages creative thinking about one’s own education. This event is an opportunity for all Sangmyung university students to engage with academic topics in a new and practical way. Whether as a contestant or a listener, students are encouraged to take part in next semester’s contest. The professor said to undergraduate students who are still hesitant about participating that is one of the few opportunities to develop their speaking skills before entering society, and said that the time and sincerity they devote to completing the presentation successfully will be a good manure for me to step up, and it will be of great help later if I challenge myself courageously. Also, a presenter who participated in the contest for three years steadily recommended that students participate in the contest with interest because it was a valuable opportunity to get detailed feedback from professors and students after finishing presentations that could not be received in ordinary education classes, and because of this, I was able to grow further. Freshman Concerns: Choosing a Major and Career Path For many first-year university students, entering college is both exciting and overwhelming. At Sangmyung University, freshmen often struggle with questions like "Did I choose the right major?" or "What kind of job will suit me in the future?" In order to provide accurate information on this occasion, I personally experienced one-on-one career consultation with professional counselors. and interviewed them. First of all, the application process is very easy. Go to the SM Challenge e-Portfolio platform and choose a consultant who is in charge of your purpose and field through the list of consultation windows. Then, write the consultation type, purpose, and desired consultation content, and click the confirmation button to complete the application. If the appointment date is confirmed, you can proceed with the consultation on the confirmed date. As a result of the on-site consultation, there were separate consultation rooms, so I was able to talk comfortably, and since they were people who had continued to study the field I wanted to receive consultation on, I was able to eliminate the anxiety that I had been growing up just by listening to my friends' stories through realistic data and actual cases from seniors, and through this, I was able to plan my college life. It was restored on May 21st after about two weeks of server restoration. In this process, many students' assinments were hindered, affecting their grades. Furthermore, students complained of various inconveniences, such as having difficulty finding their instructional materials by the professors through the existing e-campus. Therefore, we will examine the problems students have experienced, the voices of students, how to deal with school problems, and the impact of this problems on Sangmyung University's online learning environment in the future. It also provides services such as schedule notifications. As the digitalization of the university's learning environment progresses rapidly, classes that have a greater proportion of online than offline-oriented assignments and classes are currently being held at Sangmyung University. The e-campus, the center of this online learning space, began to lose access to the platform on May 3rd due to a service failure caused by ransomware, causing a disruption to students' learning as it failed to provide smooth services for about two weeks on the 21st. The biggest problem with this service failure was that students who did not quickly access the notification could be disadvantaged in their grades due to the problem of sending notifications to different channels for each professor when they were unable to access Coursemos, the only window for submitting assignments and reflecting grade points. Students who take e-learning, an online course currently held at Sangmyung University, were unable to listen to the class itself, including attendance causing complaints from students. As a response from the school, a push notification was sent through the Sangmyung Universiry portal app on the 5th, two days later, that the system failure occurred on the website on the day the server was first paralyzed. 11 days later (on May 3rd), the school announced the service problem and the current situation that the server started to fail, the person in charge requested the virtualization server management and maintenance. However, the initial response was delayed due to the closure of the related company. After visiting and checking the company, some infections of ransomware were identified and the way to solve this problem was by providing other alternative learning methods due to the long-term time required in the backup process. The school posted an announcement and apology on how the service failure occurred, countermeasures, and how the classes would be operated before the service resumed. This problem caused problems and inconvenience in learning for professors and students and reminded them of the need to provide and maintain stronger servers as they are highly dependent on online learning services due to the online learning environment. Students who felt inconvenience due to the problem expressed disappointment in that the school did not make a faster and more detailed announcement and that the notice of activities affecting their performance, such as submitting tasks, were not delivered to a uniform window. In addition, as the period of inconvenience was not short, in Everytime, a college student community, there was an opinion that the disadvantages of not using the e-campus should be compensated by adjusting the duration of the assignment or slightly easing evaluation criteria.d. It is an academic system where students are not assigned a major upon admission but instead go through a major exploration period before deciding on their field of study. In 2025, Sangmyung University introduced a new Free Major admission system. This initiative aims to expand students' academic choices through a student-centered and flexible academic system, and to foster interdisciplinary talents suited for the future society. In addition, the students in the Division of Interdisciplinary Studies are supported through a highly flexible, student-centered major transfer system, aimed at helping them make clear choices about their major and career path. Sangmyung University provides opportunities for students to explore and choose a variety of majors through the establishment of a free major. Students are supported to select a wide range of careers through their major search and liberal arts education. The exhibition took place at the Urbanpluto Gallery in Seonyudo, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul. This project, organized by TEAM BORI, focused on portraits and visually highlighted individual identity and social personas through the keyword “preference.” Personal Tastes in Everyday Life The exhibition Persona: Damda focuses on the individual tastes of each subject through portrait photography. The clothing, surrounding objects, spaces, and atmospheres of people of various ages and genders reflect their unique personalities and identities. Visitors interpret these tastes through the portraits, experiencing a process of exploring each person’s “character,” or persona. Additionally, symbolic elements representing these tastes were recreated as tangible objects, allowing viewers to engage with them visually and tactilely. Interaction with the Audience One of the exhibition’s key features is its invitation to self-reflection. By observing the preferences of others, visitors are prompted to reflect on themselves. Questions such as “What are my tastes?” or “What is my persona?” arise naturally. This creates an opportunity for self-discovery through art. Student Interview An interview was conducted with TEAM BORI, the organizers of the exhibition. Jo Hye-won (Culture and Arts Management, Class of ’22) shared, “Through the keywords ‘meeting at the boundary’ and ‘in the name of change,’ we wanted to reframe the differences in personal tastes as points of connection rather than division. We hoped to show how individual preferences can connect with others, expand, and lead to new forms of transformation.” In this way, Persona: Damda is more than just a collection of portraits — it is a thoughtful exhibition that explores identity and social connection through the theme of personal taste. In an era of rapid societal transformation, students require more than conventional academic training; they need structured guidance to explore career trajectories that align with both their competencies and the evolving job market. HUSS was established to address this need by equipping students with the critical thinking and adaptive skills necessary for future success. These events provided new students with essential information about their academic journey and helped them adapt to university life. Process of the Entrance Ceremony The entrance ceremony took place on February 27, 2025 (Thursday) at 10:00 AM at the Grand Auditorium in the Cultural Arts Hall on the Seoul campus. Freshmen were required to arrive by 9:50 AM to ensure a smooth start to the event. The ceremony marked the beginning of their academic journey, with key university officials welcoming the new students and offering guidance for their studies. Parents and guardians were not permitted inside the auditorium during the ceremony; instead, they were accommodated in a separate waiting area at Daeshin Hall. Following the entrance ceremony, the freshman orientation commenced, running from 10:40 AM to 6:00 PM on the same day. The event included welcoming speeches, campus guidance, and an introduction to academic and extracurricular life at Sangmyung University. The ceremony featured speeches from the university president, distinguished professors, and student representatives, offering words of encouragement and advice for the freshmen. Various performances, including a choir and dance team, added a festive atmosphere to the occasion. Departmental orientation sessions took place in respective locations, including the International Conference Room (College of Humanities and Social Sciences), Room 401 of the Business and Economics Building (College of Business), Daeshin Hall (College of Business Administration), and the Sports Center (College of Arts and Physical Education). 그림 2 College of Humanities and Social Sciences Orientation Senior students, who volunteered as Teaching Assistants (TAs) for the event, played a crucial role in guiding the new students. One TA remarked, "Although it was a bit tiring to arrive at school early in the morning, I am happy to help the freshmen in any way I can." Their assistance proved invaluable, especially for students unfamiliar with the campus layout. A freshman shared their experience, saying, "I didn't know where to go, but a senior from another department kindly helped me find my way. Additionally, upperclassmen shared their experiences, offering valuable tips on time management, course selection, and making the most of university life. Afterward, the freshmen participated in departmental orientations, which provided an opportunity to engage with their peers and seniors in a more interactive setting. Ice-breaking activities, group discussions, and Q&A sessions helped new students feel more comfortable in their new academic environment. Since the basketball department is located at the Cheonan Campus, students from the Seoul campus and those not interested in sports may not be aware of it. In this article, I will take a look at the proud Sangmyung University basketball team, its players, and their triumph in the 2025 Stove League. In 1996, following Sangmyung University's transition to a coeducational institution, the university aimed to create a dynamic campus environment and enhance its reputation by establishing a basketball team. As a result, the men's basketball team was officially founded on February 26, 2009. Remarkably, just one year after its founding, the team was promoted to the first division in 2010, consistently demonstrating strong performances ever since Currently, in 2025, Sangmyung University Basketball Department is composed of 10 players, including Jun-hwan Choi, Dong-myung Hong, Jung-woo Song, In-seop Park, Jung-woo Wi, Jung-hwan Choi, Chan-young Kim, Min-kuk Kim, Young-ki Han, and Yong-jun Yoon. On February 5, at the 2025 Korea University Basketball Federation Stove League, Sangmyung University triumphed over Sungkyunkwan University. At the beginning of the game, Sungkyunkwan University played with high intensity, successfully made a three-point shot and took control of the game. However, the Sangmyung University team took the lead in the game with skillful play and defeated Sungkyunkwan University aided by three-point shots from Dong-myung Hong. After the game, Sangmyung University manager Seung-jin Go said, "Since it was our first game, the players seemed somewhat nervous, so the results of our training were not fully reflected. Nevertheless, I’m happy we won, and I appreciate the players for their hard work." Additionally, Dong-myung Hong, the captain of the basketball team, said, "I’m happy with the win. However, since our team is aiming for the playoffs this season, we won’t settle for this victory. We are focused on giving our best in every game." When asked what they were most looking forward to in the university league, Min-guk Kim said, "There are many skilled guards in the current university league, so I want to compete against as many players as possible." Young-ki Han said, "I want to play against various university players to assess my skill level." Yong-jun Yoon said, "Unlike in high school, we practice with professional teams. By practicing with pro teams, I want to learn from their strengths and make them my own." Sangmyung University basketball players made an impressive start to the 2025 game by winning their first game against Sungkyunkwan University. With the league set to begin in March, there's much anticipation surrounding how the team will perform in the coming matches. After sufficient training and rest, it would be exciting to see the players showcase their skills and determination on the court. The Seoul campus ceremony took place in the morning, while the Cheonan campus ceremony was held in the afternoon. Graduation Ceremony Proceedings President’s Address At the Seoul campus, a total of 1,221 students received their degrees, including 989 bachelor's degree recipients, 106 master's degree recipients, 92 doctoral degree recipients, and 34 credit-based degree recipients. Also, at the Cheonan campus, 988 graduates received their bachelor's degrees in the gymnasium of the Gye-dang Hall. During this ceremony, several prestigious awards were given, including the Gye-dang Award to Go Yeong-ran from the Department of Management Engineering, the President’s Award to Lee Jeong-hyang from the Communication Design major, and the sm-IN Core Competency Excellence Award to Nam Taek-gwon from the Department of Human-Intelligent Robotics Engineering. The order of the ceremony included the opening speech, national anthem, academic report, presidential address, award presentations (for bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees), congratulatory songs, diploma presentation, and the university anthem. President’s Address In his presidential address, Sangmyung University President Hong Seong-tae encouraged the graduates with the following words: “I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the parents who have shown unwavering support and care for both Sangmyung University and our graduates. As they step into society, I hope their future will be filled with blessings. May they become the shining faces of Sangmyung University through growth that aligns with the changing times." Graduates' Remarks The graduates of Sangmyung University met during the ceremony, shared their thoughts and expressed their excitement for the new beginning ahead. A graduate from the Department of Nursing, A, said, “It didn’t feel real that I was graduating, but after receiving my degree today, it finally hit me. I could never have made it this far without the help of my professors and peers. I’ll continue to work hard to become a good nurse based on the experiences I gained here.” B, a graduate from the Department of Film and Video, shared, “During my university years, I learned so much while planning and shooting numerous projects. There were many difficult moments, but I think I’ll miss the times when we stayed up all night editing together with my peers.” The graduation ceremony is not just the moment of finishing academic work, but a starting point for new challenges and growth. For individuals, it represents the fruit of past efforts and the beginning of a new journey, while for society, it is a meaningful event where capable individuals ready to contribute to various fields are presented. The graduates of Sangmyung University today will go beyond academic achievement and become influential leaders, making positive contributions to society.
